tangier island, usa

Tangier Island sits in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, and it is disappearing. The island has lost more than two-thirds of its landmass since the 1850s, and researchers say it may be uninhabitable within decades. I'd wanted to visit for years after first hearing about it, drawn by the idea of a community holding on to a place the water is slowly taking back. What I found when I got there was marsh grass and still water and birds going about their business with complete indifference to all of it. A working fishing village that has been at it for centuries, living out its days in one of the most quietly beautiful places I've ever pointed a camera. These images are about that quietness. The part of Tangier that doesn't know it's disappearing.
