The hatteras coast

Hatteras Island is a narrow stretch of the Outer Banks where the ocean, dunes, marshes, and small communities all sit close together. I went down there planning to photograph some of the more recognizable places, but I ended up being just as interested in the quieter scenes: sea oats along the dunes, empty stretches of beach, the piers, the sound side, and the way the weather changes the look of everything from one hour to the next. The area feels open and a little isolated, but never empty. These photographs are really about what caught my attention while I was there, from the iconic landmarks to the smaller details that made Hatteras feel like its own place.
