My cousin was leading us through the Guam National Wildlife Refuge toward some ancient Chamorro cave markings when I stopped in my tracks. A banyan tree had taken over this limestone outcropping completely, its aerial roots cascading down the rock face like curtains. Banyans do this slowly, over decades, wrapping themselves around whatever is in their path until it's hard to tell where the rock ends and the tree begins. I could have stood there for an hour.
