"The Reserve"

from $120.00

Piney Grove Preserve in Sussex County is one of Virginia's quiet conservation success stories. The 3,200-acre preserve was created to protect the red-cockaded woodpecker, a federally endangered species that depends on mature open pine forest. By 2002, only two breeding pairs remained in the entire state, both here. Those burn marks on the trunks are part of the solution, not the problem. Prescribed fire keeps the forest floor open and the habitat healthy, which is exactly what these woodpeckers need. The population has since grown to over 100 birds. I went as part of a Virginia Master Naturalist field trip and left feeling like things can actually turn around sometimes. Shot at Piney Grove Preserve, Sussex County, Virginia.
